What to do in the event of a death

When someone close to you has died, all sorts of matters suddenly have to be arranged.
So that you have a clear idea of what must be done, we would like to present you with a checklist of everything that must be arranged as soon as possible:

  • inform the deceased's family doctor and/or GP of the death.
  • call your funeral director (T: 030-6661790) to make an appointment

So that everything will run as smoothly as possible we recommend gathering certain necessary information and items while you wait for the funeral director to call on you:

  • clothing for the deceased
  • marriage license (if applicable)
  • burial and/or cremation insurance policies

When the funeral director has arrived, you will be asked to make certain decisions with respect to all of the events concerning the death.
The funeral director will make notes of your wishes and will provide information and advice where necessary.

In making arrangements for the funeral, these matters will be brought to your attention:

LYING IN STATE
How the deceased is to lie in state is one of the first things that will have to be arranged after the death. This can take place on the person's own bed at home, in a casket at home, or in a funeral home.
If the choice has been made for this to take place at home, we will always have to install a cooling element. Before lying in state, the deceased will have to be cared for. We always employ people from the nursing profession who have had special training in this area for this task, but if you wish, you may assist them.

THE REGISTRY OFFICE
A death must be officially registered at the civil registry office in the town of death. After registry, you will receive a death certificate. Your funeral director will take care of the registry. He or she will then give you the death certificate. You will need this certificate for making up a "Declaration of Succession' by a public notary as well as for other financially related matters such as insurance policies. We will always be sure to provide you with a sufficient number of copies.

PRINTED MATTER
Our funeral director will provide you with examples of mourning cards from which to choose. The text on the cards will have to be composed. The funeral director will help you compose a suitable text and show you how to place your text correctly on the cards. Because the printing of your mourning cards is done under our own administration, you will usually be able to send them the day after the death. The funeral director will also arrange for the placement of an obituary notice in the newspapers, if desired. The acknowledgements and letters of condolence can also be handled by the funeral director.

THE SERVICE
After consulting with you, the funeral director will arrange the service in the church or the auditorium of the cemetery or crematory and any necessary preparations in the cemetery or crematory; the casket coach and family cars; as well as any other staff employed. The remaining details for the service can also be discussed with your funeral director.

CHURCH
If you wish, we can also make the necessary arrangements with your religious community.
The details of the church service will usually be arranged between yourself and your minister.
We can, if you wish, make provisions for the liturgy.

MUSIC
In most of the auditoriums of cemeteries and crematories, you will be able to have the music of your choice played. You can indicate your preferences to the funeral director. Please make your choice of music known to the funeral director at least one day before the service.

FLOWERS
You can order flowers yourself at the florist of your choice, but if you wish, your funeral
director can do this for you.. He has a book of pictures of all the floral arrangements
and funeral sprays that can be ordered for you, but any special arrangements can
also be made if you wish.

CONDOLENCE
The condolence is also in the hands of the funeral director. He will make the necessary arrangements for the location where the close relations can be offered condolences
and where the condolence book or registry can be signed. If you would like the condolence
visit to be catered, this can also be arranged.

INSURANCE POLICIES
Policies with right to payment in the name of the deceased can be handed over to your funeral director. We will ensure that these policies will be sent to the insurance companies as soon as possible, so that payments can be made.
This may pose a problem to you, because so many of these insurance companies are no longer active. As proof of receipt, the funeral director will provide you with a form on which all the relevant policies are stated by name and number.

ASHES
In case of cremation, you will have to decide what to do with the ashes after the service has been held. You will not be asked to decide immediately; you can also choose to have the ashes placed in the General Niche in the crematory first. Your funeral director can give you more information about this. If you would like the ashes to be interred or would like to keep them at home, we can also arrange for a decorative urn.

GRAVESTONE
If the deceased is to be buried, there will usually be call for a gravestone. Your funeral director will be able to tell you more about this. He has an overview of all the possible gravestones that can be placed on the grave of your dearly departed.

ORNAMENTAL URN
If the deceased has been cremated, the ashes can be scattered, but they can also be taken home after a period of four weeks or interred elsewhere. We can advise you on all the possibilities for ornamental urns. We can also provide you with additional information on other ways of preserving the ashes of your dearly departed.

PENSIONS AND OTHER PAYMENTS
The files kept by the social insurance Bank, the ABP and the Civil Registry Office are all linked to each other.. Stopping or changing a pension is all done automatically these days. If you have a pension elsewhere, we can take care of the necessary correspondence for this pension fund.

NOTARY
If you wish, we can also notify the public notary so that he can arrange matters pertaining to the inheritance.
